This report discusses a translation practice of the bestselling novel A Change of Climate (Chapter3-4) by Hilary Mantel, a famous contemporary English author. Mantel is the first native author who has twice won the Booker Prize in English literary history. She was elected one of the world’s 100 most influential people by the Time Magazine. Mantel is good at using exquisite words to describe characters and environments. So far there is neither Chinese translation of this novel, nor scholars discuss the translation experience and problems from the perspective of translation process.Guided by Yan Fu’s translation criteria of "faithfulness, expressiveness, elegance", the author analyzes the translated text type, stylistic features, language characteristics in the report, and introduces the approaches to the translation with examples. Firstly, the author gives an introduction to the background and purpose of this report from the perspective of culture communication and literary translation, and presents a brief introduction to the original work. Then the author gives an overall analysis of the original work, including the text type, stylistic features, language characteristics and social and cultural contexts, and the guiding principles of using Yan Fu’s translation criteria of "faithfulness, expressiveness, elegance". The case analysis, which is the core part of this report, explores the main approaches used in the translation, including words amplification, free translation, words formation, defining designation of pronouns, the processing of long and difficult sentences and passive sentences, the translation of passive sentence, rhetorical devices and language style, and the methods of solving translation difficulties. The last part gives a summary of this report, concerning the author’s translation, gains, problems and the insufficiencies in the practice.Novel translation belongs to the literary translation, which requests the translator to express the content and main idea of original work accurately. It is important for the translator to use the translation approaches flexibly so as to solve the difficulties and meet the needs of the target readers.
