Heritage planning: Principles and Process is one of the best works on heritage conservation by Canadian architectural historian Harold Kalman, which mainly discusses the principles of heritage planning as a professional practice field. It also deals with the changes in the ways of protecting heritage in the new era.Meanwhile,it puts forward different protection methods according to the characteristic of each heritage. As many countries, including China, are facing great difficulties in the issue of heritage conservation, translating the book into Chinese will not only provide important information for domestic heritage conservation experts, but also advance the communication of experts from all countries around the world. And the author of the report is able to apply translation theories, translation skills and other knowledge learned during her postgraduate period to the translation practice, which undoubtedly cultivates and improves her translating ability.Since the book is a scientific text characterized by concise words, rigorous structure, long sentences and many professional terms, the author of the report holds that the translation should be faithful to the source text, and accurately present the information of the source text, thus ensuring that the translation is accurate and its language as beautiful as possible. With this thought, the author of the report chooses the principles of“faithfulness, expressiveness and elegance” put forward by Yan Fu as the guiding theory to study the characteristics of scientific translation and discusses what appropriate translation methods should be used when translating a scientific book.A translation scholar thinks that "faithfulness, expressiveness and elegance" as the translation standards have high theoretical generality, which gives it a wide range of meanings;therefore, they are applicable to any translation. At the same time, when it comes to the translation of terms and compound words, the conversion of part of speech as well as the translation of long and difficult sentences and passive voice, the author of the report uses the following five translation methods, including literal translation, free translation, conversion translation, linear translation and splitting translation so as to ensure thetranslation can accurately convey the information of the source text and conform to the reading habits of Chinese readers.Although the author of the report has encountered many difficulties during the process of translating the book, she never gives up.First, the most important and difficult point in translating scientific texts is ensuring that the translation is faithful to the source text and reaches the standard of elegance on the basis of faithfulness.Second, the translation process is long and arduous. Therefore, the author of the report should be patient and confident enough to overcome difficulties. After completing the translation of the book, the author of the report has truly learned how to flexibly apply translation theories and skills to the translation practice, which is undoubtedly helpful to the translation career of the author of the report.
