The study of Chinese lexical categories is the concerning focus of scholars. And the study of multi-category words, which involves not only morphology, but also syntax, has been paid special attention to. By researching the multi-category words, a better sense of the complex relation between Chinese lexical categories and syntactic components will be provided, which will enable us to understand the characteristic of Chinese in depth.The thesis is divided into five chapters:Chapter 1 Introduction. The reasons for choosing the topic, the research steps and methods, the purposes of the study and the previous research results are discussed in this part.Chapter 2 The related problems about the inclusion and definition of Verb-Noun mutli-category words. In this part, the words defined as both verb and noun in the the Modern Chinese Dictionary are picked out and inputted in Excel. And then, Verb-Noun mutli-category words are defined. In addition, different kinds of grammatical phenomena related to the Verb-Noun mutli-category words are intercompared.Chapter 3 Category description of the Verb-Noun mutli-category words. In this part, the Verb-Noun mutli-category words picked out from the Modern Chinese Dictionary((The Sixth Edition) are described according to the classification. Both the syllable and the semanteme are taken into consideration. However, the later is paid more attention to.Chapter 4 Syntactic function of the Noun-Verb mutli-category words. In this part,26 Noun-Verb mutli-category words are selected and analysed based on the data of the NLC Corpus in order to examine the syntactic positions which make it possible for the Noun-Verb mutli-category words to come into being.Chapter 5 Conclusion. In this part, the contents above are summarized in berif.
