Since 1916 when it’s published as a part of The Morning Bell, The Morning Post Supplement was to disseminate new thoughts and new literature. After Li Dazhao the Editor transformed it into the propaganda of the New Culture Movement, discussions about classical literature had been one of its topics. In the early stage, there was a discussion on the mediation between new and classical literature. After the independance of The Morning Post Supplement, young students, Gan Zhexian for example, attempted to explore methods under the influence of New Literature and eventually managed to find the literary history and scientific Kao Zheng as their tools. After this period, the birth of Wenxue Xunkan brought it the prosperity. Scholars as Lu Xun and Zheng Zhenduo participated to create important theorys. In 1925, Yilin Xunkan led the discussion to a complex situation:the voice from traditional scholars such as Huang Kan made a phenomenon of mediation between the new and old; the study in younger students, represented by Liu Dajie and Hu Yunyi, divided and directed to different ways. This paper is based on the bibliography study and organized with a diachronic outline from 1916 to 1928 and with the study of three cases:Gan Zhexian, Liu Dajie and Hu Yunyi. It would try to throw more light on the relationship between modern newspaper and the classical study in early stage.
