Bartok Bela Viktor Janos, the Hungarian composer, is the one of the most important representative composers of the "National School" in the first half of the twentieth Century. He was born in Hungary. He moved to America in his old age because of affecting by the World War II. His life experience made his composing style significant changes in different periods, especially it contains the intense tragedy color in which his later works.His harmony technique was based on the Western classical music and Hungarian folk music, which fused into his insights for sound. Especially in the later large composition which retained large number of traditional harmonic languages and rich in morden music characteristic. The music of Bartok was very unique in the first half of the twentieth Century.His numerous works involved in a number of composing areas, such as symphony, chamber music, opera, piano and other genres. The orchestral music plays an important role in his creation, especially his later orchestral compositions, which harmonic techniques fused tradition and morden together that concentrated express Bartok’s dream of a lifetime in harmony and sound aesthetic.The article studies harmony technique by researching his last orchestral work—《Orchestra Concerto》.The author will explore the harmonic phenomenon, analyzing the harmonic thought, and trying to find out the comprehensive feature, creative mind, and the aesthetic basis of the harmonic system.This paper is divided into six chapters. The first two chapters separately analyzes the basic material of the harmony from mode, and chord structure; the third chapter explores the interrelation of the harmonic material from the prospect level; the fourth chapter researches harmonic layout and processing in the background level which as the representative the tonality is; the fifth chapter will further analyze the harmonic technique of Bartok in the composition by comprehensive researching the first movement; the conclusion will summarize the whole work that explore the creative mind, aesthetic basis of Bartok. Taking this as an example, thereby further deliberate the meaning for contemporary musical creation and the historical position of his harmonic technique.Although there are so many achievements of Bartok’s Concerto for Orchestra in the harmonic research, there is no any document which the comprehensive research is to the harmonic techniques of the composition. The author sincerely hope to perfect the project by his research.
