Marx’s definition to free time is:time that can be arranged by human’s free will after hours of labor, and also time within which human are able to develop themselves freely and roundly. The development of technology and that of society empowers more possibilities of free and round development. Marx’s Theory of Free Time is not only able to help us better understand Marxist philosophy; it also has a guiding significance for the progress of modern society.This paper first introduces the forming background as well as the developing progress of Marx’s Theory of Free Time, and states the main content of the theory. The relationship between hours of labor and free time is then analyzed through comparison, based on which the value of the Theory of Free Time is discussed. Finally, the paper seeks to shed light on the current developmental situations of free time and problems faced by people when making use of free time arc discussed, with a focus on the problem of alienation; possible suggestions on this issue are also offered.To conclude, a reasonable use of free time not only concerns individuals "free and round development, but also influences society’s civilization and advance. Free time plays a critical role within the process during which human step into the realm of freedom from the realm of necessity, and its formation provides us a new thinking direction to learn about and to understand the motivating factors of social development. With the guidance of Marxist philosophy, this paper applies the research method of linking theory with practice and that of abstract up to the concrete, to review on the content of free time, its value connotation, as well as its developmental situation and inspiration. It aims to boost people’s building of correct view of free time, based on which they are able to make full use of free time, thus promoting the development of both individuals and society. This is of great benefits to the round development of individuals, to the construction of the core value system of socialism, and to the harmonious development of society.
