With the economic globalization,China’s economy,policy and technology are on the high way speed of development which have reached at the internatonal advanced level and obtained the global attention.However, traditional festivals have been invaded by foreign culture,facing the danger out of human civilization. In mordern life, more and more young people are obsesseed with the foreign festival celebrations. The reason for that they have a very strong visual symbols, attracting people’s attention. Therefore, we should use the approach of the design thinking to summerize the Chinese festivals and extract a representative visual symbols. Regarding visual symbols of Chinese traditional festivals as a foothold to reveal its deep semantics, basic features of modeling and composition rules. On the one hand, the recognition of traditional festivals are enhanced and promoted the spread of the cultural significance of traditional festivals. The long history of the nation and splendid traditional culture are also interpreteed and promoted. On the other hand, exploring the heritage and extending from the visual symbols of traditional festivals in modern design will blend tradition and fashion which make the festivals symbols have a sense of both ethnic and contemporary and make design works always reveal the cultural heritage of Chinese pride and perseverance in the world stage, shining as its way.The origin, development and the type of traditional festivals are analysed in a deepth way. Meanwhile, considering the dilemma of the current Chinese traditional festivals and compared with the home, foreign holidays are popular among the people contrarily. Therefore, the focus on visual symbols are initiated. We can solve the problem on the marginalization of traditional festivals from the perspective of visual symbols. Then we extract the visual symbols of traditional festivals,dig the cultural connotation and semantics behind the visual symbols,heritage and promote the Chinese traditional festivals in order to contribute to the diversification of world culture.This paper focus on how to dig the cultural connotation of visual symbols of Chinese festivals and their associated semantic interpretation,and how to explore the visual symbols of the traditional festival shapes as well as its composition rules to resolve the basic features of its shape, paving the way for the modern design. First, the oneness with the creation, industrious and thrifty outlook on life, the morality of the filiality and loyalty, the concept of civilization and traditional etiquette,the outlook of auspicious willing, all that five factors reveal the visual symbols of traditional festivals. Secondly,through systematically setting and conclusion,the semantic visual symbols of traditional festivals can be divided into the following six parts:family reunion, joy and auspiciousness; flood disaster and evil, pray for peace; physical fitness and health care, care for children and respect the elder; hardworking and intelligent, strive to self-improvement; pursue a better life and look forward to the future. Then we explore the classification of visual symbols of traditional festival by modeling, which has six basic characteristics:perfection, generality, practicability, symbolism, abstractness, formulation.Finally, the constitutive rules of the visual symbols of traditional festivals can be illustrated by symmetry and balance,rhythm and cadence,coherence and repetitiousness, the theory of sharing, planar expression, which to be the fundament of modern design and provide the guidence with the modern design.Finally, this article explores the heritage, variation and development in the visual symbols of Chinese festivals. And how these can decorate our lives, link emotion between people, show the fashions as well as express the characteristics of nations.
