A Report On The Translation Of Dulse

Dulse comes from the novel collection The Moons of Jupiter, written by the Canadian female writer Alice Monroe. It is made up of ten short stories. As some of them have been published, the remaining short stories are translated by the translator and the rest five students of the group.Being dissatisfacted with various translation of the Bible before which paid too much to the formal equivalence, in the 1960 s, Eugene A ? Nida put forward two concepts: Formal Equivalence and Dynamic Equivalence. Later, he proposed Functional Equivalence as a replacement for Dynamic Equivalence. Functional Equivalence emphasizes the reader’s reception effect, holding that Functional Equivalence overweighs the Formal Equivalence. This provides a new translation standard for our translation practice. Based on this new standard, if there is contradiction between the form and the content, the content should be given the priority. The translator should try to make the version achieve the similar effect as the original. Necessary measures should be taken to let the target readers understand and receive the version the similar way as that of the original readers. During the process of translation, the translator takes into consideration of all the four aspects, namely vocabulary, syntax, text and style, and adopts different kinds of translation skills, such as free translation, synthesization, division, addition and so on. Through a series of examples, this report shows how to use Functional Equivalence theory to deal with the cultural, rhetorical and long sentences problems in the translation process.
