In recent years, there has been much attention directed to how to better transmit ethnic musical culture in the music education field. However, when we focus on the transmission of ethnic music in the campus, we have to pay close attention to the original living space of ethnic music and its unique local methods of transmission. What is the relationship between the two? What are the similarities and differences? Studying the relationship between these two contexts is indispensable to research on ethnic musical transmission. In view of this, the author has selected the Weishan County in Yunnan Province, one that is rich in ethnic groups and their musical resources and has well-preserved patterns of local culture, as the object of this study. The research uses field study methods from educational anthropology and qualitative research to explore on-campus transmission and folk transmission separately, as two paths of ethnic music transmission, and to analyze similarities and differences between these two transmission paths through survey and comparison, to discuss the possibility of an advantageous integration and mutual support. This paper is divided into four sections. The first describes the local transmission method and its function in the transmission of ethnic music in Weishan County, Yunnan Province. The second describes the transmission methods taught on campus from the three aspects of conception, content and method, based on studies in six primary and secondary schools in the Weishan region. The third summarizes the advantages and limitations of different methods of transmission through a comparative analysis of the purposes, environments, and contents. The fourth discusses and reflects on the search for the best transmission approach in ethnic music. The author proposes that the two transmission approaches, the local and the on-campus, should support each other, while encouraging further and in-depth discussion on whether ethnic music transmission should be constructed by local-based transmission or reconstructed by campus-based methods.Through description and analysis of the two basic transmission approaches of ethnic musical culture in Weishan County, Yunnan Province, the author takes the view that whether transmission is local or on-campus, it is a valid path to promoting ethnic musical heritage and development. But if we want to realize the actual transmission of musical culture, this would involve attention to a series of major issues such as the fact that local and on-campus transmission methods involve different cultural spaces. Therefore, the question of whether transmission approaches in ethnic music should be locally-based or campus-based is still worth further discussion.
