John Steinbeck is recognized as a representative of contemporary American novelists in Chinese readers’ eyes. There are abundant researches about John Steinbeck, however, most of them are still restricted to the analysis on the content or writing techniques. The researches on John Steinbeck’s translation history in China are limited to provide an overall research, but that doesn’t mean the translation activities during this period lack research value. On the contrary, the Chinese translation of John Steinbeck’s works in the new era embodies various features. With regard to this, the thesis attempts to provide a systematic study on Chinese translation of John Steinbeck’s works.This thesis adopts methods of data collection and descriptive analysis to examine the Chinese translation and publishing of John Steinbeck’s works in China. The thesis combs the published translation not only in the mainland but also in Hong Kong Special Administration Zone and Taiwan province. Then, the thesis analyzes the features of the Chinese translation of John Steinbeck’s works, including the timeliness, stress on the translation of anti-fascist works and realist works, retranslation and comprehensiveness. In the end, the paper discusses the value of the Chinese translation, including the positive contributions and influences towards the translated literature in China.This thesis attempts to further replenish the research on the Chinese translation of John Steinbeck’s works and to enrich the research on translated literature in China through sorting the translation history. It is expected to serve as a reference for subsequent studies on the translation history studies and to attract more attention to it.
