This translation practice report is the description and analysis of the translator’s translation of the third part of German Universities: Contributions to the History and Improvement of the German Universities. The translator was invited by a teacher from Hebei University to participate in the translation of the book. The translated text was to be included in the appendix of his works. The practice report is divided into five chapters: task description, process description, preparation for translation, case analysis and conclusion.Among them, case analysis is the main part of the practice report. The first chapter and the second chapter introduce the source of the translation practice, the introduction of the source text and translation process respectively. The third chapter is the preparation for translation. It introduces the author’s preparations before translation, including preparation of terms, reading of parallel texts and preliminary understanding of the source text.At the same time, through the preliminary understanding of the text, the translator chooses semantic translation and communicative translation theory as the guidance theory. The case analysis part analyzes the specific and characteristic cases that appear in this translation practice, and illustrates the difficulties encountered by the translator, and her solutions to deal with these difficulties under the guidance of semantic translation and communicative translation theory. This chapter is divided into three parts: translation of words, translation of sentences and translation of rhetoric devices used in the source text. The first part includes the translation of terms and different translations of the same word in different contexts. The second part includes translation of sentences with parenthesis and translation of sentences with dashes. The fifth chapter, the conclusion, focuses on the translator’s experience gained from this translation practice, hoping to provide some help for other translators who translate similar texts.
