An Analysis On Diplomatic Fuzziness And Its Translation Strategies From The Perspective Of Cooperative Principle

Fuzziness exists universally as one of the basic characteristics of the objective world, as well as the way of human cognition. Human language, as the manifestation of human cognition, will no doubt earn the nature of fuzziness. Fuzzy phenomenon in human language exists in every aspect of human language use.Fuzziness is a relatively new field in linguistics. Recent years, many scholars step in the research of it from different aspects, which have gotten fruitful results. This thesis has drawn greatly inspiration from the previous studies on the fuzzy phenomenon. However, as a hot topic in linguistics, fuzziness study has been mainly centralized in the basic stages like semantic, cognitive, rhetorical level. The analysis from the perspective of cooperative principles is rare.Diplomatic language, unlike daily communication, focuses on its strategic function in the official situation where every slight movement and expression will give rise to a long-term effect. Therefore, it is impossible to display all the decisions and intentions on board, for eliminating unnecessary trouble and saving faces for those who are involved. To realize this, fuzzy expression may be employed to ease the tense situation indirectly with an unclear answer or distinct form that can be comprehended varies from person to person.According to Cooperative Principle(CP) proposed by H. P. Grice(1975), in the interaction, the speaker should give the information as much as required, as informative as required, as relevant as required and as orderly as required. Considering the situation diplomatic language may confront, it is obvious that there will be fuzzy expressions to meet various purpose, and thus flout the rules that requested by an effective conversation. In most cases, diplomatic language will be companied by the translation of the original language for a spread of viewpoint to other communities. If the original language flouts the Cooperative Principle, how should the target language be translated? Whether to obey the original or to reconstruct and make the conversation as effective as required?This thesis will concentrate on analyzing the fuzziness in diplomatic language from the perspective of cooperative principle and how to proper translate the fuzzy expression to fully play the role of diplomatic language. The analysis will be based on the corpus in which the author collects 50 materials from press conferences home and abroad. The translation method of the fuzziness will be explored to set an impact on the real use.This thesis consists of an introduction, the main body and a conclusion. Its main contents are as follows:The first part is introduction. It gives a general introduction to the diplomatic fuzziness and the Cooperative Principle, besides the author briefly summarizes the current state of these research topics. It provides the significance of the diplomatic fuzziness analysis from the perspective of Cooperative Principle and the necessity of the translation strategy exploration.The second segment is the main body. It is composed of three chapters.Chapter one will lay out the theoretical framework that serves as the foundation of the thesis. A throughout introduction of fuzziness of language and Cooperative Principle will be presented which also lays the theoretical base for the next chapter.Chapter two will deal with the analysis of fuzziness in diplomatic language selected from the corpus under the guidance of Cooperative Principle. Fuzzy samples will be selected and analyzed according to the conversational maxims they violate; the behind driven factors and the fuzzy forms’ functions in diplomatic situation will be researched. The reasons and the effects will shed their light on the following translation method exploration.Chapter three will study the translation strategies of the fuzzy expressions in the perspective of CP. The author will discuss whether the translation should obey or flout the four maxims. In this section the author will propose the methods of “fuzziness to fuzziness” and “fuzziness to clearness” so as to provide an applicable method also some inspiration for interpreters or linguistic researchers on fuzzy topics.The thesis will be concluded with a brief summary of the study. Meanwhile, some limitations of the study are put forward, which may call for more specific and detailed researches in the future.
