Traditional translation studies were source-text oriented, mainly focusing on standard. The cultural school more emphasizes the relationship between translation and and the exterior world.Lefevere pointed out that translation is not only the transference between languages but also a kind of rewriting which is manipulated by the sponsor, poetics and ideology. Ideology is the most significant element which manipulates translation. Poetics and sponsors also have a bearing on ideology. Ideology guides and restricts the process of translation on various aspects such as politics, economics. The rewriter may attempt to rewrite the source text from the perspective of personal ideology or dominant social ideology. Based on Lefevere’s rewriting theory, this thesis attempts to find out the manipulation of the translation of The House of the Seven Gables caused by different ideological factors. Moreover, this thesis tries to illustrate how the ideological factors manipulate the translator’s selection of the source text, translation of the source text and translation strategy through using the descriptive approach.Based on Lefevere’s rewriting theory, through using the descriptive approach, this thesis attempt to study the ideological manipulation on the two Chinese versions of The House of the Seven Gables. This thesis analyzes how the translators deal with the different understanding towards the seven deadly sins between Chinese and Americans. This thesis finds out that the process of literary translation is manipulated by ideology, including the original author’s ideology and the dominant ideology of the translators’ society. The two kinds of ideology influence the selection of translation strategies and the fruit of the translation.
