How to deal with Chinese characters and the relationship between Zi and Words in primary Chinese Teaching, linguists and relative experts from camp of "Zi-based" and "Word-based" have made hot debates on it. Traditional "Word-based" textbooks and distinctive "Zi-based" textbooks, they all have their respective merits and features, but the arise of "Zi-based" textbooks, especially A Key to Chinese Speech and Writing and College Chinese are meant to solve the problems of "Word-based" textbooks, such as no regular Chinese character teaching, inefficiency on words teaching and literacy lagging far behind speaking and listening ability, etc. Introduction of this paper mainly introduce significance of comparativestudy on the two "Zi-based" textbooks and research status in this field. Chapter Two firstly introduce achievements and problems of textbooks of primary comprehensive course, which also reveal similarities and differences between "Zi-based" and "Word-based" textbooks, moreover, the differences explain why "Zi-based" textbooks coming up. Following are research overview of "Zi-based" and "Word-based" textbooks. Regarding to "Word-based" textbooks, I chose three representative textbooks because their writing mode is quite fixed and unified, and, I chose A Key to Chinese Speech and Writing and College Chinese among not too many "Zi-based" textbooks also because they are typical. The first two Chapters as bedding for the principal part of this paper is made to highlight the commonplace of "Zi-based" textbooks, then, Chapter Three as principal part of this paper gives detailed comparison from the angle of textbooks writing principle, compilation style, topic-selecting and arrangements for various linguistic elements. This paper illustrates cultural elements of the two textbooks designedly using a single chapter as Chapter Four due to special relationship between language and culture. The last Chapter is conclusion. The paper take comprehensive analysis on the typical "word-based" textbooks and draw forth the reasons why "Zi-based" textbooks is necessarily appeared. But why do we choose A Key to Chinese Speech and Writing and College Chinese as typical cases? There are three reasons stated at the beginning of Chapter Three. Eventually, by many-sided comparison we can see "Zi-based" textbooks indeed made a lot of attempts at dealing with "relations of Zi and Word" well. These attempts highlight Chinese character teaching so as to increase efficiency of Teaching Chinese.Generally speaking, comparative study of textbooks focus on textbooks writing principle, compilation style, topic-selecting and arrangements for linguistic elements, though, it would be better having comparison of using effects of textbooks. But limited by teaching environment and other conditions, it’s not easy to obtain scientific, effective and all-round data. The paper make deeply comparative analysis of the two "Zi-based" textbooks mainly from writing principle and theoretical level, in order to providing references for Chinese textbook writers and users.
