This thesis studies the explanations of words in ancient books revealed in Zhang Taiyan’s Lecture Notes of Shuowenjiezi, which haven’t quoted by Duan Yucai in his book of annotation of Shuowenjiezi, but quoted and annotated in a new way by Zhang. According to statistics, amounts of items quoted by Zhang but not seen by Duan Yucai is 399, which contain more than 50 innovative pieces. Some of those interpret meaning of words or according to the text, while some interpret the innovation based on the original meaning of the word or extended meaning certificated in Shuowenjiezi. 39 items are explanted in consideration of the length, aiming at digging out the reason of innovations and figuring out the value. The full paper is divided into four chapters.Chapter one is preface, making essential exposition on Zhang Taiyan, and the Notes, reviewing the studies on the Notes so far. Moreover it comments the researches of history in study of traditional Chinese Confucian classics and of literal meaning as a background.Zhang Taiyan has been called the last scholar of philology in Qing Dynasty, so it cannot be denied that his study was imprinted the mark of the age. This book is a product of Zhang’s preachment in Japan during lectures. His lecture was on the history of the Trans-past and present. He advocated Classical Learning, and his study ruled by the emphasis on accessibility, harmony. So that Notes takes the length of each, and quits the short of each. As taking in lots of research results he products his own new and unique insights. He believes philology is the primary element to solid country. Holding this conception he offered the class of philology in order to clear the situation and have the rejuvenation. His new explanation in Notes is not just for pursuing the new, but in the pursuit of the true language of the premise. In this term he discernment ancient the cases, solve unsolved confusion ancients.Chapter two and chapter three are explanations for the meanings of the words quoted by Zhang. This is the principal part of the thesis, there are 21 items interpreting meanings according to the text and 18 items interpreting based on the meaning in Shuowen.Following is the general style of each entry: each entry is marked by the word interpreted and the innovative meaning. In the explanation, interpretation in Shuowen appeared first, following Zhang’s view in the Notes with the pages and the explanation at the end. Because there is no link between dredging permits each another, so the internal structure of the informal entry is generally out of the total structure. Most of the internal structure are different, but with the same layout——summary follows further explanations, and summary at the last.Chapter four is the summary about the ways Zhang used to interpret in Notes, divided into three sections. The first section summarizes approaches in the terms of pronunciation, shape, and ancient culture. Triumph three exegetical. Section II picked interpretation of character "Tun" to demonstrate Zhang’s facility in combining traditional Chinese study of Confucian classics and study of literal meaning.
