A Study On Du Weiming’s View Of Culture

The scholarship of Modern Neo-Confucianism has gone through “Three generations with four groups”,Every representative of each generation integrated Chinese and Western values in the inheritance of traditional Confucian culture.Wei ming Du made a great contribution to the development and the spread of the Confucianism as a delegate of the third generation.It cannot be without Wei ming Du,the scholar of Modern Neo-Confucianism,to focus on Chinese traditional culture and to revive the Confucianism.The arrangement of this paper could see as below.The first chapter starts from the essential meaning of culture,analyzes the understanding and the cognition of culture of Du’s with the comparison between culture and civilization,cultures and values,culture and tradition to define the scope for the discussing Wei ming Du’s culture idea. The second chapter points out Wei ming Du proposed "dialogue of civilizations" between different civilizations.Comparing with Western culture,Du emphasized the trait of Chinese culture in the comparison of Chinese and Western culture and the emergence of recognition of the value and innovation in the inner logic of Chinese culture on the face of strong challenge of Western culture to point out the possible direction of theoretical development of Confucianism modernization----the main part of traditional Chinese culture.The chapter will also refer to the cultural values which shows on Du’s ‘dialogue of civilizations’ with four issues:democracy and people;group consciousness and individual consciousness;emotional and rational;enlightenment and reflection.The third chapter discusses further Wei ming Du is committed to the modernization of Confucian culture and let Confucianism circulate the world.Firstly it will clarify the connotation of the times of Du’s Neo-Confucianism.Secondly it will select several major problems arising in the course of modernization of Confucian culture to interpret Du’s expaination and innovation made to it.The fourth chapter is comparison and evaluation.Compare Wei ming Du’s cultural outlook with Su ming Liang’s and Zong san Mou’s,the representatives of the first and the second Neo-Confucianism,clear his strengths and weaknesses,and point out problems and difficulties existing in the course of modernization of Confucian culture.
