Since the beginning of the 40 ’s of the last century,Verb reduplication as an important modern Chinese grammar has drawn linguists’ attention. On the basis of predecessors’ studies, this paper mainly studies on the problem of universality of the verb reduplication of modern Chinese.The introduction of this article reviews the existing studies on modern Chinese verb reduplication from the important summary of the syntax forms of research results, the meaning, origin, type of structure, grammar functions and syntax, pragmatics and other aspects.In the second part, the author gives concrete examples of “verbs+ le”, “Verb+ zhe”and“verbs+ men”in Chinese that can express the perfect tense, progressive tense and plural forms respectively, the concept of universality in monosyllabic verbs verb reduplication verbs,verb structure in Chinese grammar system can be testified clearly, according to the analogy mechanism of language.The third part mainly aims at the clarify of“universality of grammar form”. Meanwhile,some listed examples of English verbs don’t have progressive or perfect tense, which proves the “universality of grammar forms”.The fourth part discusses the origin and development of verb reduplication. In the author’s opinion, verb reduplication in ancient Chinese means the reuse of verbs, which cannot be considered as a verb reduplication. Verb reduplication in modern Chinese originated in modern Chinese, and evolved from modern Chinese verb reduplication further towards the fixed, unified form.The fifth chapter primarily investigates the reduplicated verbs from the number of syllables and two structure types.In the last part, the overall understanding of universality of verb reduplication is shown.The author believes that the use of verb reduplication is more complex. Some verbs may because lexical problems, not suitable for reduplication, some verbs may also are affected their reduplication use,because of the structure types. However, it doesn’t mean that verbs don’t has the universality.
