A Study On Poetic Image Of Analogy From The Perspective Of Rhetoric

The concept image appears earlier in Chinese classical literature than that appears in western countries. In the earlier times image does not refer to the artificial figures in the poetry, while it is a kind of sign. We call the combination of meanings and signs image. And we can also regard the construction of image is the combination of objective and subjective. Understanding and realization on image in Chinese and abroad during its development are briefly introduced in the former part of this paper. Researches on image have related in many areas, such as literature, stylistics, semantics, pragmatics and they even come to the cognitive area. Although these researches have enriched the study of image, while they sill stay on the preface. For this reason, this thesis tries to find a new way and study construction of poetic image in a new perspectiveImage is the soul and life of a poem and it is also one of the important elements that contribute a poem, and it is also a clue for the readers to decompose a poem. In fact, the process of creation a poem for a poet is to find an entity as the image and to contribute the images in order to make the objective emotion expressed out actively. However, image is not simple and normal figure only, and it is a clear and brief expression after the precious observation. The development of image has a profound meaning to the poetry. A proper choice and construction of images has a great influence to the creation of a poem. In the process of the creating a poem the poets use a large of images to express a kind of meaning that can not be express by language, while for the readers it is more useful for them to grasp the intention of the poets in the poem. In this paper the construction of the images is studied systematically under the analogical thinking, and we reconstruct the image and restudy the function of the image in the perspective of rhetoric.Analogy is widely used in the development of science as a logical thinking method, while in the development of analogy it has found its advantages in rhetoric. Although in different areas, analogy still bears the characters that when it is a logical and reasoning method, such as systematic, consistency, authentic and metaphoric features.And we use analogy in rhetoric to decompose the poetic images in Chinese and abroad, and we find that image is to express the most accurate and true emotion by the most convenient and brief language. It is the main problem that how to express the most real and right feelings of the poets in the simplest words, and also use the simplest words to bring the readers into the poets’ world. So some writing methods that can express emotions without complex description appear like image. Well each analogical image appears in the poem is not at random, and it must has undergone the weighing on the logic and the accumulation on the emotion,which combine the construction of image and the rhetoric analogy together. This combination makes the function of the image add a logical function based on the original functions, and this will produce a greater effect on the whole poem at the same time.This paper consists of six parts:Background, content and the objectives of the study are briefly introduced in the introduction, and in this part the theses are also pointed out.The first chapter is the part of literature review. This part reviews the achievements of some previous studies and also introduces some scholars as well as their books and papers.The second chapter is the theoretical foundation. Boundary of analogy as a logical thinking method and as rhetoric is distinguished, and at the same time the characters of analogy are presented. These characters are systematic feature, authentic feature, consistent feature and metaphoric feature.The third chapter is the core. By analyzing the relationship between the meaning and the entity in poetic image we can find that the similarities between image and analogy in the inner structure, so analogy can be used into the construction of the poetic image. In this part lots of poetic images in Chinese and in English poems are decomposed.The fourth chapter presents the functions of the images of analogy to the entire poem. For the logic of analogy, it also adds the logical function to the poetic image besides description and emotion function and the function of aesthetics.In the conclusion main points and contents are summarized.To sum up, in theory image of analogy enriches the means and methods of image construction, at the same time it also broaden the range of studies. In practical, for the writing of a poem image of analogy can make the poets more logical and also can make sure a good situation of a poem. While for the readers, image of analogy is a new breakthrough to get into the inner world of the poet and it also make the poem easy to understand.
