The ceramic, as the earliest medium of painting from primitive times to today, has shown unparalleled charm with its own material properties and techniques. Moreover, the form of decorating ceramic utensils with emblazonries always follows the law of aesthetic trend in its development and evolution. In the historical background, the strength of our country, the foreign exchange and the transformation of the society all affect the content and style of ceramic paintings. In the period of the end of Qing Dynasty and the beginning of Republic, with the demise of the royal family, ceramic paintings got rid of the shackles of the royal family and gained independence and freedom. The "poetry and print" of literati paintings was painted in Jingdezhen’s "Eight Friends of Zhushan", so as to promote the transformation of ceramic paintings from craft decorations to the art of painting. Currently, with the continuous collision between eastern and western cultures, great changes in people’s life and custom have taken place so that traditional literati paintings have been unable to meet the aesthetic needs of modern people. Therefore, the new literati paintings come into being in such an circumstance. Although there have been praises and suspicions since its creation, when in face of the traditional cultural ideological trend such as "break and abandon", "wholesale westernization" and so on, the new literati paintings unswervingly take the path of "inheritance and innovation". Although there are rebellions against the literati paintings in both its theme and aesthetics and it lacks the scholar’s style of literati paintings, its pursuit of ideas, its sticking to the national culture and its innovation of the old things are new literati painters’ inheritance of the spirit of scholars. In contemporary ceramic art, the artists with scholars’ characteristics of the new era are represented by the academism, and they have the tendency similar to new literati paintings in subjects, techniques, aesthetic tastes. Although the features presented by works are of all kinds and diversified, their essence lies in the artists’ thinking and identity of national culture under the new times background.
