As an interdisciplinary subject, sociolinguistics explores the language from different point of view, and studies language variation which generate in different social conditions. Chinese linguists need to introduce some original foreign books if he wants to learn about the language, society, evaluation and attitude of different social groups toward languages and language varieties, and the generated social effects, in China, the translation of the original material is seldom. In order to make more researchers and enthusiasts learn about achievements and developments of sociolinguistics overseas, the author suggests that research on Sociolinguistics is extremely important and useful. At present, although there are many books about sociolinguistics in China’s market, most of them are domestic authorities’ book on sociolinguistic theory, the study on translation is seldom. There also exist some foreign versions; therefore, a Chinese translation is urgent need. The study on Sociolinguistic translation has the macroscopic instruction function for English teaching, so accurate translation on these texts can not only spread foreign theories and achievements to Chinese readers to provide the advantageous theory on the basis of the domestic social linguistics study and the teaching, but also enhance the readers understanding of western society, and promoting the dissemination of different socio-cultural and academic exchanges of linguistics between Chinese and western, in addition, the translation studies of the text has guiding values for related texts and translation teaching. The author translates the first two chapters of Sociolinguistics into Chinese and completes the translation report by combining noble functionalist skopos theory and Newmark’s text type theory. Based on Newmark’s text type theory and linguistic characteristics, the text can be identified as informative text which aims to provide information. For this purpose, translators adopt the method of equivalent translation and follow “loyalty rule” and “skopos rule” during the translation process, and emphasize the intended function as a starting point, transmit information accurately, on the frame of functionalist skopos theory. The author made full preparation before translation, analyzed intratextual and extratextual factors, and used Internet at the same time, for example, searching the related materials on linguistics translation from CNKI; solving the problems occured in translation, and summarizing the translation skills of the text. In the report, the authors first identified the text type, and analysized the literary style, lexical and syntactic features to pave the way for translating the text. In order to ensure that language specification for accurate and the translation text easily understood and meet the target language expression habits, the author followed the principles of loyalty in translation process and the basis of semantic equivalence of source text and the target text. Finally, the author classified and analysized problems in translation process; summarized the translation techniques and skills of the Sociolinguistics text and occupational accomplishment of linguistics translator. The translation of the text can give guidance for related texts translation in future. Meanwhile, the project as a Chinese version of the original English book provides reference to foreign language teaching and academic exchange in the field of linguistics. In addition, the Chinese version of the text can use as studying materials for the people with professional knowledge.
