Hypothetical marker is one of the significant expression methods of irrealis category. As procedural discourse has obviously irreal characteristics, when doing the studies of hypothetical maker with irreal semantic meaning being in irreal procedural discourse, we need another research angle which differs from previous studies. This article uses statistic Method, method of comparative analysis, and the method of combination of qualitative to describe and explain the regularities of distribution of hypothetical maker in procedural discourse.This dissertation is divided into four chapters. The main contents are as follows.In chapter one, it determines the research scope of hypothetical marker, defines what procedural discourse is, also reviews and combs the research status of discourse, procedural discourse, hypothetical maker and hypothetical maker in procedural discourse. In all, it explains the theoretical basis of the whole article.The Second chapter is the main part of this article. It observes the regularities of distribution of hypothetical maker in procedural discourse via the statistic analysis of real data. Further, it summarizes the characteristics of procedural discourse.Chapter three, which is also the main part of all, presents a brief discussion on the features and reasons that hypothetical maker being used in categories of menu, driving, photography, martial arts, experiments and instruction books. Further, chapter three mainly analyses the characteristics and reasons of each category.Chapter Four, which is the epilogue, summarizes which we been discussing in whole article,emphasizes the meaning of hypothetical maker research in procedural discourse, and stresses the importance of irrealis category in the study of grammar.
