The paper makes a diachronic description of the single-syllable hypothetical conjunctions, and conducts panel discussions to research objects. From the perspective of syntax, semantics and context, the author uses the theory of grammaticalization to explore the function shifting process and explain its reason of evolution.Temporarily, the author does not discuss the further grammaticalization or extinction of the hypothetical conjunctions. There are five chapters in the paper.Introduction mainly overviews the research findings of relevant hypothetical conjunctions, and describes the definition of conjunction as well as its judging standard according to experts' views. Then, the author defines the scopes of hypothetical conjunctions which do not include the conditional-concession conjunctions. In the first chapter, the author analyzes the formation and evolution of the hypothetical conjunctions-“yao” and “she”.By doing so,the author finds there exists the evolution path of “ volition-hypothesis” in Chinese history. In the second chapter, the author analyzes the formation and evolution of the hypothetical conjunctions-“shi” and “ling”.By doing so,the author finds there exists the evolution path of“causation-hypothesis” in Chinese history. In the third chapter, the author analyzes the formation and evolution of the hypothetical conjunctions-“huo” “pa” and “tuo”.By doing so,the author finds there exists the evolution path of “probable-hypothesis”in Chinese history. In the third chapter, the author analyzes the formation and evolution of the hypothetical conjunctions-“bi”.By doing so,the author finds there exists the evolution path of “affirmation-hypothesis” in Chinese history. In the final chapter, based on the previous discussion, the author summarizes the general factors which are evolved from the hypothetical conjunctions including extension of lexical meaning, syntactic position, contextual effect and reanalysis.
