Focusing on the phonology in Zhangxian dialect, this paper is aimed at providing an overall picture of the dialect with a special emphasis on due contrasts between different phonology of Zhangxian dialect, of Mandarin and of Middle Chinese.The paper contains 5 chapters the main contents of which are as follows.The first chapter is an introduction giving such information as the current situation of the study, the purpose of the paper and the background of the phonology collaborator in addition to a general survey of the county in terms of its geography, history and population.The second chapter is a detailed analysis of the dialect phonology system which gives a comprehensive description of its vowels, consonants and tones trying to find a possible law guiding the match between its sounds and rhymes.The third chapter shows a table of homophonic characters in Zhangxian dialect.The fourth chapter is a discussion on the synchronic sound variations in the dialect, providing a detailed investigation into the tone sandhi of disyllabic words together with other kinds of synchronic sound variations. As a result, sound variations of the dialect in utterances can be studied.The fifth chapter shows the contrasts between different phonology of Zhangxian dialect, of Mandarin and of Middle Chinese. The contrast between the dialect and Mandarin is aimed at finding a possible corresponding law on a synchronic basis, and the other contrast between the dialect and Middle Chinese is aimed at a diachronic law instead.
