The material referred to in this report is selected from Yang-style Taijiquan, one of the Textbook Series of Chinese Wushu Grading System, which are compiled by Wushu Research Institute of the General Administration of Sports of China and approved by Chinese Wushu Association. The translator translated Section Five and Section Six of Chapter Two, and completed the translation report based on Section Six. The material introduces the routines for individual exercises, the routines for dual exercises and the defense exercises of Yang-style Taijiquan, Grade Six. Embodying the comprehensive application of the five basic technical elements in Chinese Wushu, namely punching, kicking, grasping, leaning and wrestling, it is the most difficult part of the whole book for exercisers. The material is illustrated to describe how to practice the movements, which makes the movements clearer and easier to learn. The translation practice is based on the Skopostheorie proposed by Hans J. Vermeer in the 1970 s. Vermeer holds that translation is a kind of cross-cultural human communication with clear aim and purpose and on the basis of source text. Skopos theory mainly focuses on the purpose of translation, which determines the translation strategies and methods used in the translation process. According to Skopos theory and the characteristics of the source text, the translator uses the foreignization strategy to translate the names of movements and the explanatory notes for the pictures, which contain a lot of taijiquan terms, so as to reserve its ethnic and cultural identity. And domestication strategy is used to translate the content that elaborates the movements and skills, so that the target text can be easily understood by foreign readers with different cultural backgrounds, which will help them practice Yang-style Taijiquan much better.Among all the styles of Taijiquan, Yang-style Taijiquan is the most popular one. Its translation and introduction has certain representativeness and reference value for the study of translation and communication of Taijiquan, even that of Chinese martial arts.
