Milan Kundera (1929-) is the famous Czech writer, currently living in France. In this Master’s thesis, I’d like to do research on Kundera’s influence on Chinese society and literature from the Czech perspective. Milan Kundera’s works are famous all around the world, but I want to focus on two dimensions of his influence, that are dimension of China and dimension of the Czech Republic. While Milan Kundera’s works are very famous all over the world, however, in his homeland-the Czech Republic, he is the author who renounced his life in the Czech Republic. For these reasons, he is called "European writer".Milan Kundera’s novels started to be popular in China since the 1980s after the reforms and policy of opening-up, a large number of his works were translated into Chinese. From the Czech perspective Kundera became popular in China mainly because of the language, philosophical aspect of his works and the unique style of Kundera’s writing, the historic reasons reflecting that China and the Czech Republic have experienced some similar situations.Milan Kundera is not only a writer, but also a deep thinker who influenced many authors from the whole world. His novels include philosophical reflection on life and social issues. Kundera affects the reader’s thoughts with his theory of Kitsch and individual freedom, social freedom issues and pragmatic attitude. Kundera describes the problem of Kitsch in connection with the freedom of politics. Kundera’s philosophical theories also contain social and interpersonal difficulties of philosophizing, reflections on relationships and sex, revolutional and reactional attitude is also one of the features of Kundera philosophical thoughts.
