Application Of Totem Patterns In Modern Design

Every nation, every ethnic group has its own unique and splendid culture. Totem is one of them. Totem is not just a symbol, but a pattern for a nation, it represents spiritual and ethnic beliefs. Totem combines the character and qualities of the nation,national culture creates new value in its origins, evolution and constant fusion. This also shows that the cultural values behind the totem is immeasurable. In this paper,through the study of the origin of the concept and totems, and to explore the relationship between totem and modern design, and thus specific to the application of traditional totem in modern society. This includes trademark, logo design, architecture,clothing, etc., a comprehensive understanding of the role of the totem in modern design. Aesthetic values embodied cultural totem let tradition totem and modern art design closely together. It is the perfect expression of a fresh modern designers, and eventually become a new form of art and design. Finally, through personal experience,the author chose the aborigines of Lanyu island of Taiwan, especially for the application of totem culture in modern design,the study discussed the importance of traditional totem in modern design and future development trend.
