Collins Quite Brilliant:A Celebration of British English is a book describing English language and culture. The first edition was published in 2012 by the HarperCollins Publishers which is one of the largest English language publishers in the world. It includes altogether seven chapters, and this translation report is based on the last four chapters. In the fourth chapter, the countryside is introduced to the readers, which includes all kinds of fine views of the countryside, trees, animals, birds, flowers and the weather. The fifth chapter tells the reader about the work in Britain. The sixth one puts its emphasis on the English language itself, from its Anglo-Saxon origin, to the influence of the invading races, from the loanwords and expressions to different dialects. The last chapter gives a vivid account to British landscape and customs. Although it cannot be compared with such books as Encyclopedia Britannica which is much more systematic and comprehensive, this book focuses on the most British of all. What’s more, the editors of this book adopt a humorous tone while telling the stories, which makes it more appealing and readable.There are five parts in this report. The first part is introduction; the second part is introduction to this translation project, consisting of the background of the translation project, brief introduction about the text itself, and the reason to choose this text; the third part is the preparation before translating, which includes the preparation of related reference books, materials and relevant theories; the fourth part is the analysis of specific examples in the translation, which is based on the functional translation theory of Germany and in which the actual examples and some other relevant translation theories are also adopted, with the emphasis on the comparison between Chinese and English as well as the translation of proper names; the last part is the conclusion of the report, summarizing the shortcomings of this translation and experience gained from it.
