"Ideological Criticism:Judges 17-21 and the Dismembered Body" is a paper written by Gale A Yee, an American scholar who studies the Bible. Including seven parts such as "What is ideology", "What is ideological criticism", "Judges 17-21:an extrinsic analysis of the dismembered body", the paper makes an ideological criticism, and uses literary methods within a historical and social-scientific frame in a comprehensive strategy for reading biblical texts. In the paper, on the one hand, the social sciences and historical analyses help to reconstruct or "unmask" the material and ideological conditions under which the biblical text is produced; on the other hand, literary-critical methods are used to address how the biblical text assimilates or "encodes" these conditions in reproducing a particular ideology. It is an academic, professional paper about Bible research, so it is difficult to understand the author’s ideas exactly. Besides, its style of writing is eloquent, along with logical and elaborate sentences. The paper is an expressive text, and according to Newmark’s translation theories, semantic translation as the main translation strategy and communicative translation as a subsidiary strategy are used to express the ideas of the author exactly and to reappear the eloquent style of the paper. This report introduces the English-Chinese translation practice of the paper, focusing on the translating process; besides, translation methods and strategies with typical examples in the thesis are discussed, and retrospection and summary of the practice are included, too. The report is divided into five chapters. Chapter one is the introduction, briefly presenting the background and description of the project. Chapter two is description of translation process, introducing preparation before translating, translation process and summary and retrospection after translating. Chapter three introduces the translation theories. Chapter four is analysis of the cases in four aspects: the translation of terminology, long and complex sentences, citation, and the translation of Further Reading and Notes. Chapter five is reflections on the translation practice. The introduction and translation of the paper will promote the communication of China and western countries in biblical literature area, and provide Chinese scholars of this area with references so as to promote the development of the research. Translating this paper is a chance as well as a challenge:it will improve the translation ability of the translator; at the same time, it will give some relevant experience for others through summarizing the principles and methods of translating academic papers on biblical literature.
