C-E Translation Report On China S Regional Security Environment Review(Excerpt):Countermeasures For Translation Of Metaphorical Ideological Words

The material of this C-E translation project is excerpted from China's Regional Security Environment Review featuring frequent use of metaphorical ideological words.The major difficulty that is dealt with in the report is the English translation of such metaphorical ideological words,which can be mainly divided into the following two categories:(1)difficulties in translating regular metaphorical ideological words;(2)difficulties in translating special metaphorical ideological words.This report discusses the countermeasures for the above-mentioned difficulties in translation on the basis of the Skopos theory which emphasizes that translation strategies and methods are determined by the purpose and the intended function of the target text.The author believes that the main purpose of this translation practice is to elaborate on the 2016 events that have an effect on China's peripheral security,open a window through which readers around the world can have a better knowledge of China,and understand and accept what we are trying to convey and advocate with an positive attitude.Given the above-mentioned difficulties,the author has adopted the following translation methods:For the regular metaphorical ideological words,Conversion of Metaphor to Sense is adopted to present the figurative meaning or symbolic meaning of such words.For the special metaphorical ideological words,the following three methods are adopted:(1)Paraphrase:paraphrase is adopted to conduct interpretative translation for the ideological words with implicit information;(2)Adaptation to Emotional Coloring:this method is adopted to weaken the obvious negative emotions or attitudes embodied in some metaphorical ideological words and express them in a relatively neutral way;(3)Idiomatic Translation:for certain metaphorical ideological words of which the corresponding idioms with similar meaning can be found in the target language,idiomatic translation is adopted to replace the content of the source text with the corresponding idioms in the target language,so as to make the target text more acceptable to readers and enable them to appreciate the coincidence of different cultures.Through the C-E translation practice and the discussion on the solutions to the difficulties encountered in this translation practice,the author has gained a deeper understanding of political texts,improved the translation ability,and accumulated experience for future translation.
