This paper adopts Maogusi Culture which is inherited by the Tujia folks in Xiangxi district, and studies the dramatic features of Maogusi Culture for the first time.First, the debate in the academic field about whether Maogusi Culture should be classified as a primitive dance or a primitive drama, and the major theoretic bases for the “primitive dance” and the “primitive drama” are objectively introduced. Based on the introduction, the advantages and defects of these theories are pointed out and commented. The research framework of this paper is to study the dramatic features of Maogusi against the cultural background of the oriental and western drama theories, and based on the first-hand materials obtained through the author’s field survey. The author reflects on the on-site nature, sup positive nature and conflicts of drama reflected by Maogusi Culture. While exploring the on-site nature of Maogusi Culture, the materials obtained from the field survey show the onsite emotional interaction intensity of Maogusi cultural performance and the reasons for the on-site emotional interaction are theoretically analyzed. In terms of the supportive nature, the author mainly discusses it from the perspective of the drama time and space and the drama performance roles based on the field survey. The author also thinks about the relationship between the drama’s supportive nature and the art’s authenticity. In terms of the dramatic conflicts of Maogusi Culture, the author mainly demonstrates the conflicts between man and nature and between man and man implied by the Maogusi cultural performance, and how Maogusi solves these conflicts. Based on the above discussion, the internal properties of Maogusi Culture, namely its dramatic features, are proved. After the three dramatic features of Maogusi Culture are demonstrated, the dramatic defects objectively existing in Maogusi Culture are expounded, which provides counter-evidence for the dramatic features of Maogusi from the other perspective. To be specific, the author analyzes three problems, namely the loose structure, the lack of dramatic suspense and the imbalance between dramatic movements and dialogues, at an attempt to give rational explanations from new perspectives and further prove its property as a primitive drama.Through the above analysis of the dramatic features of Maogusi, the author proves the features of Maogusi Culture as a primitive drama. Thus, it is justified to regard Maogusi Culture as the most time-honored primitive drama form.
