West Hunan ballad is the product of people’s work and life which profoundly embodies the ethnic spirit, psychology, emotion and aesthetic habits of the Miao people. It is one of the excellent traditional cultures of Miao people in west Hunan. Based on the gradual declining functions of west Hunan Miao ballad---marriage and entertainment, it finds that young people don’t pass on the west Hunan ballad through field investigation. Based on the above three points, it shows that the contemporary west Hunan Miao ballad has already started to decline. West Hunan Miao ballad is going to face the challenge of survival and development. Against this background, the author finds that the in Wengcao Village, Morong Town, Guzhang County, XiangXi Autonomous Prefecture, the west Hunan ballad presents a revival trend instead of showing any declining signs. As one of national intangible cultural heritages in China, it is delighting for west Hunan ballad to have such status in this village. Based on the inundation of Miao ballad by contemporary mainstream music, this paper discovers and analyzes the main reasons for west Hunan ballad in Wengcao Village from declining to revival. The external reason is that personal socialization drives group socialization and the internal reason is the second recognition of Miao ballad culture in this process of socialization. This paper explains the significance of cultural identity in the revival of west Hunan Miao ballad. This paper provides effective reference for the development and inheritance of west Hunan ballad with real cases.
