The Miao costume art in west Hunan shines most brightly in the field of Chinese clothing art. The intangible heritage is regarded as a walking dictionary which records the culture,history, religion and clan memories of Miao nationality in west Hunan. Its tales of legend, ethnic migration and local customs and practices are manifested in every kind of pattern of Miao costume. The phoenix pattern is one of the most representative one among them. As one of the most ancient patterns in China,phoenix pattern has been mysteriously bound up with Miao nationality for its wide use in the Miao costume of in west Hunan as the most traditional adornment pattern in Chinese culture and close relation with local people’s daily life over the past several thousand years. It not only manifests the super craftsmanship of these women from Miao nationality, but also embodies the deep history and culture.This thesis probes the research meaning of the aesthetic characteristics of phoenix pattern of Miao costume in west Hunan for the the modern clothing design from three aspects.The first part deals with the origin of this pattern, the totem worship of phoenix and its cause as well as the sculpt andinheritance of phoenix based on the analysis of those phoenix patterns in Miao silver ornaments, the blue cloth with white design and Miao cross-stitch works. The second part concludes the image representation of phoenix in the Miao embroidery and its status,totem worship in Miao costume as well as the implied meaning of being auspicious,rich and honorable.The third part discusses the aesthetic value of phoenix and mainly about the influence on aesthetic sculpture of phoenix pattern in Miao costume in west Hunan exerted by witch culture in Chu and Panhu culture. It also includes their aesthetic implication and sculpture law.Those sculpture law and aesthetic characteristics are further applied in clothing design to reexamine the vision and shape themselves,which is of great significance to the theoretical study of sculpture art.The traditional ethnic costume culture provides designers worldwide with a wealth of valuable source and inspirations,which contributes a lot to the modern design. It is called one hundred Miao nationalities because of its different branches with their distinct clothing. It is worthy to be noted that a large number of pattern craftsmanship in Miao costume has disappeared rapidly with the the accelerating modernization process and the abrupt arrival digital age. This study consistsof the analysis of Phoenix pattern’s historical source,diversity of symbolic meanings and aesthetic features of different adornments use in blue cloth with design in white,wax printing and tie-dying and cross-stitch and tuck stitch. The sculpt law of phoenix pattern is unveiled and applied in modern design.The study also discovers the most regional features of Miao culture based on some rare ecologic culture materials and those materials related to clothing and adornment to make some contribution to the protection and inheritance of national culture.
