China is the largest developing country in the world, with its economy growing significantly and people's well-being being improved dramatically. However, the overheat economy has caused intense social competition and wide wealth gap,and that has affected people's mental health.Watching loads of accidents and incidents showed on mass media, people started to learn the significance of psychology. The translation of psychology literature has pormoted the introduction of Western psychology, which would make a big difference to the development of Chinese psychology.Psychology refers to neuroscience, neurobiology, cognitive psychology, experimental psychology and other branches of discipline. When translating this kind of literature, translators should be rigorous and professional, should have language competence and translating experience.Newmark's theory of communicative translation and semantic translation has been put into practice, and would be a theoretical framework for the study of psychology literature's translation.Communicative translation focuses on producing effects on its reader, while semantic translation emphasizes reproducing the exact contextual meaning of its original. While these two methods have several differences, they have something in common. In fact, they can not be separated completely. From the perspectives of rhetoric, syntax, cultural message, and words, this paper has studied the application of the communicative and semantic translation theory in the Chinese translation of Looking for Spinoza. It is expected to provide a reference for other translators.
