Translation Report Of The Third Chapter Of English-only Europe? Challenging Language Policy

This task is the translation of English-Only Europe? Challenging Language Policy, a social language book provided by Routledge Press. This famous book is regarded as one of the classics in Europe language policy.I adopted the functional equivalence theory of Eugene Nida. The cores of the text are the truth and readers. Therefore, Communicative Translation Strategy is adopted during translation. Because of the great difference between English and Chinese, the difficulties of the translation are mainly the polysemy of a word in English, translation skills of long sentences, and translation at the textual level, which all need the required qualities of the translator. So the translator should pay more attention to the background of the book and the writer, understand the theory structure and keep good patience and attitude in the translation process.The report is the analysis and summary of the third chapter(“Global trends impacting on European Language policy”), which consists of five parts. The first part is an introduction of the background information and an analysis of the significance of the translation project. The second part gives an overall description to the task, which consists of three parts, the introduction of the preparation, the description of the process and the textual analysis. The third part is mainly on the theories. The forth part discussed the specific examples at lexical level, sentence level and textual level in the translation process. The fifth part is a summary of the report.Language policy is a great concern all over the world. The translation of this book is not only providing a reference for language makers, but also providing some direction for the domestic researchers to do analysis and discussion.
