Improvisation, which has a long history, displays different approaches of performance in each period. In Europe, the form of piano improvisation came into being and grew up with booming development in the Middle Ages. With composers becoming more carefully marking on the score, the ability of improvising is gradually neglected.However, in the second half of the 20 th century, improvisation began to burgeon. And free playing style was accepted by players. In the 21 st century, many musicians began to actively explore the possibilities of improvising. For cultural and historical reasons,music improvisation in China is fulfilled mainly through traditional musical instruments.Piano improvisation is still a weak link. With its growing popularity, piano improvisation(including solo and accompaning), as an important skill, should be paid much more attention. Chu Wanghua, a renowned pianist and composer, has made an outstanding contribution to piano improvisation. Therefore, this thesis, based on the theoretical and practical aspects, respectively summarizes the contribution Chu has made in piano improvisation area.This text is divided into five parts: The first part is to an introduction. Including research origin, research status and innovation. the second part is to define the concept of improvisation and the relationship between solo and accompaniment separately. The third part is to describe Chu’s practical improvising performance in terms of practice in composition, performance and teaching. To summarize his contribution to the field of piano improvisation is the fourth part. The last part is to discuss the enlightenment from Chu’s contribution, exploring the current situation of extemporaneous accompaniment in Higher Normal Education, and to look forward to the future.
