As we all know, Zhao Shuli and Liu Qing, the greatest rural novel writers in the 20 th century, have contributed not only a number of creations but also their whole lives to serving the rural people. However, their creative trajectory and work style is very different, Zhao Shuli is committed to popularize the "Popular Literature View" and write the "problem novel", with a large number of strong realism style works, which are true representation of the real struggle of rural stage at various times after the liberation. Liu Qing sticks to the concepts of "life is the basis for the creation ", and writes the long novel-- The history of entrepreneurship-- with the combination of romantic atmosphere and realism style. Both their personalities and novel styles are precious spiritual wealth for future generations, which worth more pondering and learning.As a relatively comprehensive comparative study about Zhao Shuli and Liu Qing, this paper will use several methods in three parts, such as comparative analysis, case analysis, text reading. The introduction part reviews previous studies about Zhao Shuli and Liu Qing during 60 years in order to redefine their role in the history of literary criticism. The first part covers their life road and creation experience, to lay the foundation for the later comparison. The second part, which is also a core part of this article, compares Zhao Shuli and Liu Qing’s artistic styles from three major aspects: the structural of the plot, characterization and language style, in order to show the strong realism style in the novels of Zhao Shuli and the combination of romantic atmosphere and realism style in the novels of Liu Qing. The third part recounts the history of rural novels among the last century firstly; then emphasizes Zhao Shuli’s impact on the Shanxi writers groups and Liu Qing‘s impact on the Shaanxi writers groups; finally, affirms their dauntless spirit as proletarian revolutionaries. The conclusion part shows the enlightenment of Zhao Shuli and Liu Qing’s spirits to modern literature.
