Research On Xiao Youmei’s Art Songs And Singing Style

The lied of Romantic Movement flourishing in 19 century has always been the important field of music study. Those early lied composers, represented by Xiao Youmei,brought lied into China from Europe in the 1920’s and 1930’s, which opened the great journey of Chinese new music. Mr Xiao Youmei composes plenty of lied from 1920’s and 30’s. At his urging, music college was opened in shanghai and lots of concerts ware organized. His creative style plays an important role in the formation and development of Chinese lied. Some of his music are widely sung in the folk, including Asking,Swallow Saying, May Forth Patriotic Song, Yanghwa and so on which embraces school songs and red songs. The effect is reflected in three aspects of lied, namely poetry,melody and piano accompaniment, some of key connotation and style features cannot be ignored by us. In the guild of elderly artists represented by Xiao Youmei,Chinese lied and traditional culture combined closely. Different from other artists, Xiao Youmei’s composition has strong epochal character. He, via musical composition,advertised revolutionary spirit, committed himself to promote music education, upgrade national quality, and awaken national consciousness. The thesis firstly would analyze his creative value to lead us know his purpose of composition, and then through particular elaboration on lyric, singing skills and piano accompaniment, the author grasps the composition essence of Xiao Youmei’s lied on the whole. Xiao Youmei, as a pioneer of Chinese lied, made a comparison between traditional Chinese music and western music, and made composition on the basis of combing the spirit of times, that is very praiseworthy. Lastly, in the course of analysis, the author would closely combine theory and music analysis to give a decent assess on the Mr Xiao Youmei and his composition.The whole thesis has six chapters, generally study and analyze the lied of Xiao Youmei.The first chapter: the author would mainly analyze the thesis’ s subject, summarize contemporary lied and research status of Xiao Youmei, and lastly present research methods.The second chapter: the author would generally introduce and state lied and personal life and composition of Xiao Youmei.The third chapter; the author would analyze Xiao Youmei’s music styles from the angle of lyric and composition.The fourth chapter: the author would mainly study the piano accompaniment of Xiao Youmei’s lied, and expound its very expressive force to his lied.The fifth chapter: the author would elaborate singing skills of Xiao Youmei’s lied from the aspect of performance.The sixth chapter: the author would make a summary of whole thesis, and give a decent assess to Mr Xiao Youmei.
