The translation material chosen--- All Fall Down was written by the famous American best-selling writer Jennifer Weiner. The book has four parts in all(28chapters), and the first chapter is chosen as the translation text(about 10690 words). It is mainly about an ordinary housewife who, due to heavy pressure, tried to comfort herself by using drugs, and even addicted to drugs, but finally found the true self back and overcame the drug addiction. This translation report, based on the text All Fall Down(excerpt), tried to make a preliminary study and exploration of the technique and characteristics of novel translation by using the translation shift(Catford) and skopos theory(put forward by Hans J. Vermeer), aiming to solve problems confronted in the literary translation and study some effective translation strategies and methods so as to improve the ability of the author’s translation skills. This translation report is composed of four chapters:(1)Task description, including introduction of the author, the material and translation requirements;(2) Process description, consisting of preparations, process of translating and proofreading;(3) Case study, which is the core of this translation report, including case analysis of different kinds of shifts under the guidance of translation shift theory and the translation strategy---addition with the help of skopos theory;(4) Conclusion, including brief discussion of the differences between English and Chinese to explain why the main two translation theories are adopted to cope with these tough translation problems.
