There are two parts of this paper: the first part is the E-C translation of the ninth and tenth chapter of Red, White and Black: The Peoples of Early America and the second one is a translation report on the basis of the translation practice. With the help of Reiss’ s text typology and Catford’s shift theory, the primary research and exploration about the translation characteristics and skills in history text can be found in this thesis and this thesis also strives to use these theories to solve the problems in the translation process. This thesis aims to improve translator’s practical ability in translation by contrasting and analyzing the different translation strategies and methods. This translation report consists of four chapters: the first one is the task description, including the introduction to the translation task, the reasons for choosing this source text and the requirements for the task; the second is the process description, including the preparation before translation, how to solve the difficulties by the text typology theory and Shift-theory, the selection of the translation strategies and methods, and the proofreading plan; the third is translation process description, or the integration between theories and practices, mainly including the introduction to the shift theory and the varied kinds of case analysis according to the classification of the shift theory; the last is a conclusion, including practical experiences and skills learned in the translation process.
