As a classical literary theory work, A Poetic Exposition on Literature is of both ideological depth and artistic beauty. Stephen Owen elaborated on his understanding and translation of this work in the book of Chinese Literary Theory:English Translation and Criticism, focusing on three main points. This thesis analyzes his translation strategies by comparing and contrasting different versions.There are three chapters. Chapter One is about Stephen Owen’s retrospective and creative interpretations of literary critical terms, including those of literary genres and of ambiguous meanings. Chapter Two is about the strategies and inclinations adopted by him when translating metaphors of literary images and allusions. Chapter Three comments on bis ways of handling the balance between the form and meaning of a language.Stephen Owen’s translation has got some shortcomings, but his text-centered interpreting method and various translation strategies are enlightening and worth learning.
