D.H. Lawrence, an English writer with unique style and original ideas, is one of the controversial writers in the literary circle. He has created a large number of great works and Sons and Lovers is his most famous masterpiece. Since it’s published, many scholars attempts to analyze it from different aspects and the most popular scientific way is the psychoanalysis which focuses on analyzing the Oedipus complex, men and women relation and bisexual harmony. With the rapid development of feminist movement and blossom of feminist literary criticism, many feminists reinterpret Sons and Lovers from the aspect of feminist literary criticism. However, they all focus on analyzing female’s living condition and their miserable fate. This thesis tries to use the feminist literary criticism to reanalyze Sons and Lovers. Meanwhile, the three key words:the patriarchy, the other and the gender are used to analyze the three tragic images. It focuses on stating the new females fighting against their tragic fates in the patriarchy. Unfortunately, as the other and the second sex, although they have achieved independence and freedom in a degree, their resists are not rootless. By indicating the tragic life of female in the family, female’s rebelling and submitting and the loser images in the love relation, this thesis put forth effort to find out the social root of these tragedies-patriarchy. These three females all obtain some characteristics of new women, but because of their inherit limitation and ingrained patriarchy ideology they couldn’t break off the patriarchy fetters. Thus their resistance with both progress and compromise is the tragedy of their own, early feminist movement and the age.On the basis of the former study, this thesis will interpret the three tragic images in Sons and Lovers from the aspect of feminist literary criticism and point out the compromise in the process of resisting. Meanwhile, it also points out the reasons of halfway:their own weakness and deep-rooted patriarchy. The interpretation of this thesis has a positive meaning for feminist movement and the women’s liberation. On the one hand, it provides a sufficient evidence and powerful support. On the other hand, it offers a new way of women’s liberation-overthrowing the patriarchy.
