A Report On The Chinese Translation Of Karakoram Highway

This thesis is an analysis of Karakoram Highway: the High Road to China written by John King as the source text. This part focus on the history, geography, religion, distance between tourist attractions and travel safety instructions along the Karakoram Highway. This book not only introduces the difficulty of building the Karakoram highway, but also promotes the tourism development along the road and strengthens the friendship between China and Pakistan. While translating the source text, the author takes Reception Theory as guidance in the purpose of striving to optimize the semantic, cultural and stylistic equivalence between the translated text and the source text so that the TL reader’s response to the translated text is as close as to the SL reader’s response to the source text. During translation, the difficulties are the understanding of complex connotations, special words and culture involved. Thus,before finding an appropriate way to reproduce the meaning of the source text, one has to understand the literal meaning of the sentence and then tries to comprehend the deep meaning.The thesis adopts translation strategies of generalization, contextual amplification and shift of perspective to translate. Besides, the thesis’ s author realized reception theory is of great significance in guiding English-Chinese translation practice, and to strive for be a good translator,one needs consistent efforts and practice.
