| With novels frequently topping the list of bestsellers at home and abroad in recent years,the domestic market is thriving in introducing excellent foreign literary works while Chinese culture and literature are going global.Therefore,excerpts of the novel The Lincoln Highway published by American writer Amor Towles in 2021 are selected in this report as the source material whose translation is subjected to detailed analysis from the perspective of Toury’s translation norms theory,with the translator’s attempts to bring inspiration to novel translation.In addition,Chinese readers might be pleased to learn about the history of the Lincoln Highway and American highway culture by reading the translated version.The practice-based research has led the translator to find that translation norms have enlightening significance for novel translation.Preliminary norms and initial norms guide the selection of the translation material and the positioning of overall translation strategy from the macro level,which can promote the consolidation of the translator’s macro translation awareness;and the operational norms help the translator to deal with specific words and sentences from the micro level for achieving the intended translation effect.However,as for the positioning of overall translation strategy,the translator also finds that it might be a tricky task to maintain a biased balance between acceptability and adequacy since the readability and accuracy of translation should all be taken into account. |
