Traditional Chinese paper-cut art is a long-lived and important representative of folk art in China. This article is a comparison of Chinese and Western paper-cut art development based on the differences in culture and the differing psychological perspectives. Beginning with the historical origins of both Chinese and Western paper-cut art, we analyze the differences in art valuation, design orientation, and the cultural thinking of the times. We also look at modern Western design themes and how these elements might be combined with or incorporated into traditional Chinese paper-cut art subject matters. With emphasis on the analysis of psychological differences between China and the West, we look at the reasons for a thriving of the medium in modern Western art. Our hope is that through a comparative study and analysis we might broaden the modern artistic approach to traditional Chinese paper-cut art. In so doing our goal is to keep and preserve the local characteristics of traditional Chinese paper-cut art while also growing and developing the modern art form in China. To help keep traditional Chinese paper-cut art alive and well it can be grown and transformed from a simple arts and crafts business into a modern commercial fine arts industry.
