Research On The Modern Chinese Structure Of ’Verb+Kai’

The topic of this research is about’Verb+Kai’. It started from language facts, based on the investigation and analysed on a large amount of corpus. It discussed the grammatical feature of’Kai’and’Verb+Kai’, the semantic types of’Verb+Kai’, the expanding foundation and path of’Verb+Kai’. Meantime, through the comparison between’Verb+Kai’and other similar structures, we discovered the unique traits of it.Besides the introduction and conclusion, the main body of the paper consists of four chapters.Chapter 1 is about the definition of’Kai’and’Verb+Kai’. There are different opinions about the grammatical feature of ’Kai’and’Verb+Kai’, the majority hold that ’Kai’is one of the tendency verbs, and’Verb+Kai’is verb-tendency complement. As to the concept of tendency verb is controversial, that makes it even more difficult to define the grammatical feature of ’Kai’ and "Verb+Kai’. Therefore, we get started from the tendency verb, following the principle of combination of form and meaning, brought forward the test criterion to tendency verb, and redefined the boundrary of it. Based on the research, we hold that ’Kai’ is not a tendency verb, and ’Verb+Kai’ is not a verb-tendency complement.’Kai’possesses various meanings as well as usages. Some of Kai’can be used in the sentences independently, we called a verb and marked as Kai1. Some of’Kai’have to be followed after other verbs and adjectives. They lost their independency, but they still have actual meanings. We call this kind of’Kai’as functional verbs and marked as Kai2. Besides, one special usage of’Kai’is as dynamic auxiliary word, we call it resemble dynamic auxiliary word and marked as Kai3. Based on this, this paper divided ’Verb+Kai’ as ’Verb+Kai1’,’Verb+Kai2’and’Verb+Kai3’.Chapter 2 adopted quantitative analytical methrod to analyse the semantic types of ’Verb+Kai’, analysed all the verbs from A Dictionary of Verb usage and examples of ’Verb+Kai’ from Peking University corpus and Beijing language and culture university corpus. Based on the above reaserch, we classified 19 types of’Verb+Kai’, and inspected the features of verbs.Chapter 3 is about the expanding foundation and path of’Verb+Kai’. This paper reconstructed four Prototype semantic features from the cognitive perspective by adopting the theory of prototype category, metaphor and Image Schema theory. The four features are the door from closed to open, the distance between doors is getting big, the door left its original position, the arms from rounded up to stretched. The conculsion we reached is all the semantical types’Verb+Kai’expanded from these four features.At last, by comparing with other similar structures, we found the pragmatic features of’Verb+Kai’. Although ’Verb+Kai’ and ’Verb+Xia’ both can mean containing, there are differences between them.’Verb+Kai’ means surface containing or required more space because of expansion.’Verb+Xia’ means container containing. Although ’Verb+Kai’ and ’Verb+Zou’ both can mean leaving the last position,’Verb+Kai’ means a small move, easy to go back and offering convenience.’Verb+Zou’ means a big move, not easy to go back, and also means being accompany and giving.
