A Study Of Subtitle Translation In Documentary Films From The Perspective Of Cultural Communication

With the development of internationalization, television works have become a significant approach for culture transmission. Visual culture transmission plays a dominant role in modern culture transmission. The studies on movie subtitles translation are more and more popular among researchers. This thesis aims to study the translation of the documentary subtitles by analyzing the series Snapshots of Xinjiang. The writer has deeply analyzed the translation problems of these translated subtitles under the view of cultural transmission.During the preparation of the translation, the writer watched the documentary series carefully, comparing the Chinese version with translated English version, consulting many relevant documents and analyzing the accurate translation of the subtitle. During the study, considering the special features of subtitles, guided by cultural transmission theory and relevance theory, the writer analyzes the translation of the subtitles of Snapshots of Xinjiang in detail. In accordance with the practical problems in the translation, the writer puts forward five translation methods: cultural compensation, cultural transplantation, cultural mediation, the logical transformation between different languages and the cultural adaption between different contexts.The writer hopes to provide some guidance for others through this study.
