Documentary Subtitle Translation From The Perspective Of Eco-translatology

January 1st in 2011 has witnessed its official launch of Chinese first professional Documentary Channel---CCTV-9 Documentary Channel. As the first-run program, the full-length documentary Wild China began to hit the big screen. Coupled with its hot broadcast, a new strain of “documentary fever” has attracted attention from scholars from all circles. In the meanwhile, subtitle translation in documentaries has also drawn attention of some translation researchers. Unfortunately, efforts on the researches of subtitle translation are obviously insufficient: there are some papers or journal articles dealing with this matter, nevertheless, no systematic theories can be utilized to guide subtitle translation. Therefore, it is necessary to study documentary subtitle translation especially in the background of the new era.In the light of Eco-translatology put forward by Prof. Hu Gengshen, this theory is based on Darwin’s theory of evolution. Concentrating on the translator, guided by “adaptation/selection”, Eco-translatology makes a new description and interpretation to the nature, process, standards and principles of translation. Theoretical analysis and examples of analysis about the case study are adopted. This thesis conducts an investigation into a Chinese subtitle version of documentary Wild China and discusses what translational eco-environment in documentary subtitle translation is, the formation of two translational eco-environments in specific translation as well as what the translator’s adaptation and selection are and how they are achieved. At the same time, by a comprehensive analysis of certain chapters taken from this version, this thesis focuses on the evaluation mechanism of translations in Eco-translatology: the holistic degree of adaptation and selection, which is the highest principle the translator should abide by when translating. As for the translation text, this thesis presents you a clear idea of how the translators reproduce the essence of the original from linguistic, cultural and communicative dimensions under the translational Eco-environment. In combination with readers’ feedback and the quality of a translator, this thesis comes to a conclusion of this study that the very Chinese version of Wild China conforms to the harmonious eco-environment for translation, and achieves higher holistic degree of adaptation and selection.This study verifies the guiding significance of Eco-translatology: the approaches to Eco-translatology can be utilized to produce proper translations and interpret the translations well. This thesis hopes to make a modest contribution to the translation of documentary subtitle as well as provide enlightenment for subtitle translation learners, and finally appeal to more scholars paying attention to and actively advance the development of Chinese Translation theory.
