The scope of ancient books in this study includes most of the Chinese books from Song to Qing Dynasties. Colophon of ancient books is a mark commonly seen in ancient Chinese printed books, which includes the name of the maker, place, time and version information, comparable to modern book’s logo, copyright or mark. Ancient Booksellers, in order to attract readers and to improve economic returns, designed colophon mark carefully, so as to achieve the effect of advertising and commodity promotion. The collection of ancient colophon is practical use, art, history and culture combined. Its important value, is not only reflected in the publication, copyright protection, version identification and other aspects, but is also reflected in art appreciation. In addition to the extensive use of traditional symbols of tripods, tiles, stone inscription, seal, auspicious, harps, lyres, etc. figure, ancient colophon, as logo design for the ancient books, also makes use of fonts of seal script, official script, regular script and running script and so on. Various monomer or text node type integrated in designs, rich in content, profound in meaning, serve as vivid statements of book publicity and copyright protection.This study, from the angle of design art, tries to discuss the design and culture of Colophon of Chinese ancient book. The whole paper is divided into five chapters: the first chapter is the introduction. This part introduces the subject, the research ideas and the key points of this paper. The second chapter is a brief introduction to the historical background of the ancient books. By introducing brand mark of origin and value, it is indicated that the woodblock printing in Song Dynasty saw its popularization and ancient copyright consciousness was budding. The third chapter is for brand mark design for specific analysis in different periods of time, from the layout design, pattern, fonts, and other specific induction and analysis. This is the focus of the thesis. The fourth chapter discusses in detail the ancient card design culture, detailing note card features of the times and different publishing aesthetic taste. The fifth chapter according to control the "form" and "potential" of Colophon, to explore its overall performance in the functional, cultural and artistic aspects of the traditional design aptly applied to modern design. The conclusion part summarizes the main points of this paper, and the prospect of the research.The object of this paper is not limited to a certain era of brand mark design, but spans the Song, Yuan, Ming and Qing dynasties, over a thousand years. The study strives to combine macroscopic and microcosmic aspects, to combine the individual and the whole. Through the discussion of this paper, we wish to draw more attention from the scholars, to push forward the research on the design of the art and cultural heritage in one of the brand, and to provide good reference value for the current book logo design and the Chinese style of the national design.
