The project is simulated E-C simultaneous interpretation of three addresses made by Christina Lagarde, Managing Director of IMF, in the second half of 2014. It is an individual practice aiming at improving the author’s interpreting competence. This report is a summary of this project, focusing on the difficulties and strategies regarding simultaneous interpretation of parallel structures. In order to enhance persuasion and charisma of her addresses, Lagarde uses a large number of parallel structures, especially parallel phrases and parallel sentences, which cause two major difficulties during simulated simultaneous interpretation. One is information loss caused by parallel structures with large amounts of information and the other is expression difficulty caused by parallel structures with incomplete language components and logical implications.According to Interpretive Theory, interpretation should be regarded as a communicative activity, in which interpreters should deliver sense rather than language itself. Under the guidance of the three steps of Triangle model Interpretive Theory, the author extracts semantic information from linguistic forms of parallel structures, and expresses it in Chinese. With regard to interpreting methods, syntactic linearity and structural reformulation are employed to resolve the difficulty of information loss caused by parallel structures with large amounts of information; interpretive addition and logical addition are applied to resolve expression difficulty caused by parallel structures with incomplete language components and implicated logical relationship.
