The spreading of Wang Xizhi’s calligraphy is the result of calligraphers’ inheritance generation by generation. Calligraphers explore the essence of calligraphy style in Weijin Dynasties by studying the calligraphy stills of Wang Xizhi. Rulers who like calligraphy, like Emperor Wudi in Liang Dynasty and Emperor Taizong in Tang Dynasty, extremely appreciated Wang’s calligraphy. So Wang is respected as a sage in thousands of years, and it is popular to learn from Wang. Just because Emperor Taizong liked Wang’s calligraphy very much, lots of authentic works were buried with him in Zhaoling mausoleum which cannot be seen today. We can only explore Wang’s calligraphy by facsimiles of Tang Dynasty, inscriptions and copies of inscriptions. However, Wang’s writing style is preserved by those inscriptions and copies of inscriptions. And calligraphers through the ages can learn Wang’s structure of Chinese characters and promote Wang’s calligraphy. By analyzing the works of calligraphers who learn from Wang, this thesis will study heritage and development of Wang’s running script’s principles of Chinese characters’ structure in different periods. By some relevant research, this thesis will present a clear structure of how Wang’s running script’s principles of Chinese characters’ structure are inherited and the reason of the heritage and the connection between the outward manifestation and the thoughts in different periods.
